The German activist animal rights group, Animal Rights Watch (ARIWA) filmed in secret at a number of farms run by prominent members of the industry in 2015. They found conditions that were in 'clear violation of the law' when it comes to animal rights. Pigs and turkeys were the key animals that were in focus. The animal rights group put the images fully in the public eye by giving the footage to the regional public broadcaster NDR and the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. Independent consultants were asked to comment on the footage and they were appalled by what they saw. The farmers who were being accused of bad practice included Thomas Storck, chairman of the Turkey Association and Paul Hegemann, chairman of the Association of German Pig Production (ZDS). The story is still ongoing and it is likely that it will go through the courts in the near future. It is a serious wake up call though for the industry to improve and for regulators to ensure the law is being upheld.
