With the rise of social media, more people are aware of the plight facing animals more than ever before. One of the most widespread and accepted forms of cruelty is that which occurs on factory farms across the U.S. With the suffering of so many animals in one industry, however, it honestly can be overwhelming, trying to put it all into perspective. Luckily, thanks to the new website Animal Clock, we can get a realistic view and concrete numbers to start making much needed change.

What is Animal Clock?

Animal Clock is one of many companies on the web looking to support anti-animal cruelty measures, although how it does so is rather unique. When first opening the website, you'll notice a large clock with the numbers quickly rising. This clock works to estimate the number of animals killed in the United States this year alone for food. Beneath the main timer, you can see the annual death stats for a variety of animals in the United States. Working to eliminate animal cruelty, Animal Clock brings to light the growing amount of deaths that happen every second in the US. With an average of 287 chickens, 4 pigs, and 1 cow being killed every second in the United States alone, the impact this has on a global scale is staggering.

What's the Point?

Animal welfare, simply put, refers to the complicated relationship between humans and animals, as well as a person's responsibility to care for the animals around them. Since the first animals were domesticated, animal welfare has been a priority for humans, although some seem to forget the importance of this responsibility in today's society.

Prioritizing animal welfare is the first step towards ending animal cruelty. One of the most victimized groups of animals in the U.S. to date are chickens harmed by factory farming. According to the annual animal death statistics published by Animal Clock, there are over 8.8 billion chickens slaughtered yearly. When taking a look at some of the practices of factory farming, it's not difficult to see why. More often than not, male chicks are separated from the females at birth. Male chicks serve no purpose to the egg industry after they're born, and they are instantly ground up on the day they are born. If steps are taken towards prioritizing animal welfare for these factory farmed animals, there stands a fighting chance for animals all over the world.

How You Can Help

If you're an animal lover who believes in putting an end to animal cruelty, there are a variety of ways that you can help. One of the most effective ways to make a significant impact is by committing to a vegan or vegetarian diet. For those who aren't ready to make that leap, there are other options to make small changes to your everyday life such as:

Embrace Meatless Mondays. First initiated in the United States during the Great War, meatless Mondays are a fantastic way to cut down the average consumption of animal-based products without having your family go vegan. Try introducing meatless meals to your house every Monday. Once you develop the habit, you may find yourself choosing meatless alternatives more often.

Cut down on waste. One of the biggest ways you can help reduce the amount of animal cruelty is to make sure you minimize your waste. Not only is this good for the environment, it's the easiest way to make sure there are no animals being killed senselessly. To start cutting down your waste, try only selecting enough meat for single meals at the grocery store, instead of buying in bulk and throwing the majority out.

Donate to your local and highly rated animal welfare charity. This can be on of the easiest ways to help fight animal abuse. Find a trusted local charity and donate whatever is feasible for you.
If there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that animal cruelty must come to an end. Working with organizations such as PETA, The Humane League, and Mercy for Animals, it's possible for the average person to make an impact. Reducing the amount of meat you and your family consume is just one of the many ways you can help reduce the number of animals killed for food every second in the United States. Be sure to check out your local animal welfare society to find out how you can get involved in local efforts to change an animal's life.
