Zoo officials shot and killed the 17 year-old endangered silverback gorilla 10 minutes after the child made his way into the exhibit and fell. Security felt the child's life was in danger and felt a tranquilizer may have taken too long to take affect.
Several witnesses report the gorilla seemed to be guarding the boy before being spooked by the frantic screams of zoo-goers. The boy's family reports the boy is home and doing fine.
Once again, an animal pays the ultimate price for human error. A four year old boy "fell" into a gorilla exhibit on Saturday afternoon at the Cincinnati Zoo. A witness reports hearing the boy express wanting to jump in the water with the gorillas.
